CROOKED TREE WILD LIFE SANCTUARY

This bird watchers paradise is located 33 miles northwest of Belize City. The sanctuary is 6 miles long and 3 miles wide, and is actually an island connected to the mainland by a mile long causeway. It was established in 1984. With a large network of inland lagoons, swamps and waterways, this sanctuary provides safety and food for its diverse population of birds including the snowy and great egrets, snail-kite, black bellied whistling and Muscovy duck, kingfisher, osprey and also, the rare jabiru stork, which stands at 5 feet in height and has a wingspan of up to 12 feet. The sanctuary is also a home for Black howler monkeys, coatimundi, iguana and Morelet’s crocodiles.
