PLACENCIA
If you're headed to Belize, don't miss Placencia, a charming coastal village that marries authenticity with comfortable tourism quite beautifully. The town sits at the end of the Placencia Peninsula, a long strip of land that runs parallel to the coast, and makes an excellent jumping-off point for any number of snorkel, fishing, or diving trips. The vast majority of the establishments here are devoted to that sort of tourism, so you can easily join in on a boat tour by heading from shop to shop in the balmy early mornings. The locals are very friendly and very relaxed and lodging is plentiful, as are palm trees and a rainbowy array of luscious tropical flowers in gardens growing right out of the sand.
